A
ttractive, functionalAn attractive, functional outdoor living area can be one of the finest features of a home, enhancing its appearance, increasing livability, and bringing pleasure to those who use the space. As more and more people retreat to the home to seek relief from the fast pace of the times, well-designed decks are becoming preferred places to relax after work, entertain friends, and regroup with the family.
Designing a Wooden Deck

We
will provide all drawings, prints, etc. to the township necessary to
obtain the permit. We will schedule all inspections which your
township requires.
The holes are dug to meet or exceed your townships requirements, which is normally a 36 inch hole. We pour approximately 16 inches of concrete into the hole, set the post, which is a pressure treated 6 x 6, and then pour approximately 12 inches of concrete around the post. The rest of the hole is then filled with dirt. Upon customers request, we can also pour the footers with concrete to ground level, using a sono tube. A plate is then attached to the 6 x 6 and anchored into the concrete. An additional charge is normally applied to do this.
The 6 x 6’s are then notched out to accommodate a double 2 x 10 beam. The beam sets in the notched out part of the post. It is then bolted to the 6 x 6 posts using 2 1/2 inch thru bolts per 6 x 6 post. (The reason for the notch out is so the weight of the deck rests completely on the 6 x 6 post and not just on the bolts.
The ledger board, which is the board attached to the house, is attached using 1/2 x 5 inch lags spaced 14 inches apart. Prior to attaching the ledger board, we will cut out the siding, flash it using vinyl flashing. If the ledger board needs to be attached to concrete, we use concrete wedge anchors 14 inches apart. Our framing joists are standard 2 x 10 pressure treated boards spaced at 14 inches on center for straight flooring and 12 inches on center for diagonal flooring. All joists are attached to ledger board using joist hangers. The joist hangers are zinc coated and hot dipped galvanized to eliminate rusting.
You
can choose to either run flooring straight, diagonal, or multiple directions.
Whatever you choose, there will be no splices in the floor and it will be
professionally cut to fit against the house and around objects such as spouting,
etc. All edges are routered to give the flooring a finished and elegant look.
Our flooring is normally screwed using 2 and 1/2 inch screws. The screw color
will match the flooring color to blend in and make the screw less noticeable. We
use a dura spin screw, which has a reverse thread near the top of the screw.
This kind of screw eliminates any kind of “mushroom” which is when there is
small “bumps” where the screw head went into the flooring. We also use hidden
fasteners, which completely eliminates any kind of surface screwing and there
will be no screws showing on the deck surface. There is normally an additional
charge for this option.
Normally we notch out the floor to accommodate a 4 x 4 post. This is installed on the inside of the outer 2 x 10 and gets nailed and lagged with 2 3/8 inch lags. We use a construction grade of doug fir for the 4 x 4’s, as opposed to pressure treated. The reason for this is the fir does not twist as it ages and thus insures that your railing will stay perfectly straight. For most railing styles, the railing you choose will have a post sleeve designed to fit perfectly over the 4 x 4’s and also a post trim, which slides over the post sleeve and down against the floor to give it a great finished look. The railing of your choice is then installed.
Our
steps are cut out of pressure treated 2 x 12’s, and custom made on the jobsite
to accommodate your deck to ground level. They will be concreted in, using the
same method as the deck footings. The risers, (the back of the step) will be
covered with the same product as the flooring on your deck and the ends will be
routered to blend in perfectly with your deck.
The exposed pressure treated, which is the outer 2 x 10 around the deck and the sides of the steps, is covered with fascia to match you deck color. You can choose to either have the fascia put on vertically or horizontal. This finishes off your deck so that everything blends in beautifully. This is standard and not an additional charge.
Lattice
is optional and normally not included in the base price of the deck. Should you
choose lattice we use a vinyl lattice, normally the color of your railing unless
you request different. It is framed using pressure treated 2 x 4’s and we can
build a hinged door for access. This provides a nice area to store items
underneath your deck.
If you prefer to have stone put underneath your deck, we will do so. First we put down a weed barrier to prevent grass from growing underneath your deck, then cover it with 2 - 3 inches of stone. We put down the stone of your preference. The most commonly used are the red 3/4 inch decorator stone or the 1 inch white round stone. This is normally an additional charge.

Cost Information
The cost of your deck will vary greatly depending not only on the size of deck or materials you select, but also can be affected by many things such as terrain, elevation, and the level of detail (such as railing design, steps, planters, etc). We will meet with you at your home to discuss many aspects of your new deck, including design and material selection. Of course, this visit is at no cost or obligation..
Design
Making
sure that your deck compliments your home, your yard
and has the
right space for your outdoor furnishings is important. We will work with
you to create a deck that is as beautiful as it is functional that also
fits your budget.
FAQ’s
Q:
Do I need a handrail?
A:
Building Code requires a handrail for all decks or walking surfaces more
than 30” above ground.
Q:
I saw a great, open style handrail design in a magazine, can you do that
for my deck?
A:
Many ‘open’ style handrails
do not meet Austin's Building Code of maximum openings such that a 4”
sphere can not pass through at any point in the rail. We are happy to
work with you to design a rail that you will not only be happy with, but
that will keep you and your loved ones safe, as well.
Q:
Do you build ramps for the
disabled?
A:
Yes, we are more than
willing to build a ramp for your needs, whether at your deck or entry to
your home.

Wood
· Outdoor Wood -
Chemically treated wood that resists insects and
decay.
· Cedar -
Naturally resistant to insects and decay, a fairly
soft wood.
· Redwood -
Harder than Cedar but still considered a soft wood, Redwood is more
resistant to
insects and decay than Cedar.
· Iron Wood -
Also known as Teak, lpe’ or Mahogany, Iron Wood is extremely hard and
very resistant to insects and decay.
Composites
· Trex -
www.trex.com
Trex decking and railing products
are made from a unique combination of reclaimed wood and plastic, giving
you the best qualities of both materials.
· Mikron -
www.mikronvinyl.com
Mikronwood decking is
formulated to be work-saved, shaped and fastened almost exactly like
real wood but without the knots and cracks. Mikronwood, the beauty of
real wood without the imperfections.
· GeoDeck
-
www.geodeck.com
GeoDeck™ is a state-of-the-art
system that consists of matching boards, railings, posts, balusters, end
caps, fascia board, post caps, post base trim, and hand rail
collars—everything necessary to create an attractive deck.
· ChoiceDek -
www.choicedek.com
ChoiceDek comes with a
manufacturer's warranty for residential use from Advanced Environmental
RecyclingTechnologies, Inc. (A.E.R.T.), which is twice as long as most
composite decking materials. Its patented process encapsulates wood
fiber in plastic making it resistant to rot and insects. This makes
ChoiceDek a favorite building material for decks, docks, piers, marinas
and other walkway surfaces. And ChoiceDek is made from recycled wood and
recycled plastic so it's an excellent choice for the environment.
· EZ Deck
- www.ezdeck.com
In order to maintain the
original appearance of wood on a deck, it must be maintained by painting
or staining. Even with this diligent care, insects or the elements take
their toll and it is not long before replacement is necessary. EZ Deck
boards are made with a fiberglass reinforced composite that is
specifically designed for decks. These components provide a very stable
product which is nearly impervious to the forces of nature and able to
withstand the demands of a deck surface.

Deck Refinishing
If you own an older/wood deck and would like a new composite deck with low maintenance railing and flooring you may be able to significantly cut back in the cost of an all new deck. Many times an existing deck's structure, since most are constructed using a pressure treated lumber, is still in great condition and would last for many, many years down the road. We can take off the old rail and floor and replace it with the materials of your choice. We can also add additional deck area to your existing deck and make it look like a totally new addition to your backyard. Call us to schedule a free estimate on your project and one of our salesman will come out and we will inspect your existing deck and determine if we can use the current framing for the new deck space.

Introduction to San
Antonio-Austin,
Texas
One of Texas' most famous cities is the City of San Antonio-Austin. Located in the
south-central part of the state, San Antonio-Austin is Texas' second-largest city and
serves as an economic and cultural gateway to the American Southwest. The city
lies about 140 miles northwest of Corpus Christi on the Gulf of Mexico and 150
miles northeast of the city of Laredo on the Mexican border. Several major
freeways service the city, including Interstates I-10, I-35, I-37, and I-410;
U.S. Routes 87, 90, and 281; and Texas State Highways 16 and 151.
Named for Saint Anthony of Padua, on whose feast day (June 13) a Spanish
expedition explored the area in 1691, the San Antonio-Austin River was the principal
tributary which spawned the founding of its namesake village in 1718. The site,
on the river's west bank, was initially a stopping place on the Texas wilderness
trail leading to French trading posts in Louisiana. By 1731 the town was known
as San Antonio-Austin de Béxar, which in 1773 became the capital of Spanish Texas.
During the Texas Revolution, San Antonio-Austin was the site of several battles,
including the battle of the Alamo in 1836, in which 189 defenders held the old
Alamo mission for 13 days against some 4,000 Mexican troops. Although the
defenders were ultimately killed, the memorable phrase "Remember the Alamo"
became forever known as the rallying cry of the Texas Revolution against Mexico.
After the Civil War, San Antonio-Austin prospered as a cattle industry hub and military
center serving the border region and the Southwest. During the twentieth
century, San Antonio-Austin became an important military center for the Army and Air
Force through both world wars; a distinction which it has retained to this day.
San Antonio-Austin is the current home of Fort Sam Houston, Lackland Air Force Base,
Randolph Air Force Base, and Brooks City-Base, with Camp Stanley and Camp Bullis
located just outside the city limit
